For Rasmus, working on ZS Discovery feels like an exploration of craftsmanship—an artful process of extracting meaningful insights from complex data. “I’m fascinated by how curiosity drives innovation,” Rasmus says. “As an example, the pencil—an incredible productivity booster in its time—is a product of the combination of technological advances and a genuine need in the real world. That is what an entrepreneur does—seek out places where technology can be applied to make processes more efficient and impactful.”

In his current role, Rasmus is particularly drawn to the potential of large language models (LLMs) and knowledge graphs to revolutionize how we approach scientific research. Rasmus is building a tool that can analyze vast amounts of scientific literature, identifying statistical patterns and uncovering insights that might otherwise remain hidden. These findings have the potential to accelerate treatment discovery, bringing us closer to groundbreaking therapies and better patient outcomes.

“LLMs have fundamentally changed the pace of drug discovery by streamlining how we process and interpret vast amounts of scientific research,” Rasmus explains. “What once took weeks or months to analyze can now be done in moments, allowing us to uncover patterns, generate insights and accelerate the journey from data to discovery.”

One area largely impacted by this work is indication expansion. Indication expansion is the process of identifying new therapeutic uses for FDA-approved drugs beyond their original intended purpose. By exploring how existing treatments can address additional ailments, pharmaceutical companies can bring effective therapies to patients faster and at a lower cost than developing entirely new drugs. For patients, this means quicker access to potentially life-changing treatments, while clients benefit from maximizing the value of their existing therapies. The LLM tool Rasmus is developing supports this process by analyzing vast amounts of scientific literature, identifying patterns and extracting insights that might point to new indications.

Our new LLM tool will benefit stakeholders across the pharmaceutical companies we serve.

“It’s impossible to ask a scientist to give the same attention and detail to the 100th article they read as they did to the first,” Rasmus says. “By automating the manual task of combing through research, scientists are free to focus on strategic decision-making and deeper analysis, ultimately accelerating the discovery of innovative therapeutic applications.”

At ZS, curiosity fuels everything we do. Whether it’s uncovering new therapeutic possibilities, leveraging leading technology like LLMs, or accelerating breakthroughs in drug discovery, we’re constantly exploring uncharted territory in science and innovation. For those passionate about diving deep into data, uncovering insights and improving life and how we live it—ZS offers an environment where curiosity thrives and ideas turn into tangible impact. If you’re excited by the prospect of shaping the future of scientific research and discovery, we invite you to explore a career with us.
