In a world where the opportunity to explore new paths has never been more accessible, stories of personal and professional transformations continue to inspire. ZS is dedicated to providing opportunities for growth and expansion, empowering our people to work across diverse industries and in global offices. Schafer Newman, a recently promoted manager, was eager to take this opportunity and explore life and work in Buenos Aires.
Where passion changes lives
Schafer fell in love with travel during his time serving in the Navy. “I think travel is one of the ways that we as people can self-actualize,” he says. “We learn about new cultures, have new experiences, grow beyond our comfort zones and see the world.”
After serving for seven years, Schafer was eager to channel his skills and discipline into his work and civilian life. He sought a career that not only aligned with his love for exploration but also provided a supportive environment for veterans. This pursuit led him to ZS, where he found the perfect blend of professional fulfillment and camaraderie. At ZS, Schafer works in the travel and hospitality industry while benefiting from the robust support network of Veterans@ZS. As one of our many employee-led community groups, Veterans@ZS helps ZS recruit, unite and develop talented people with valuable military experience.
“Having a network of veterans to talk with during the early days of my career was invaluable,” Schafer shares. “I got to start this journey with a community checking in, offering support and helping me thrive.”
Pursuing his passion for travel, Schafer’s work connects him with industry leaders across the globe. Leveraging ZS’s cutting-edge solutions, he works on creating innovative strategies that drive revenues, customer engagement and loyalty for leading travel and hospitality brands. Through his efforts, Schafer has proven himself instrumental in building and maintaining strong relationships with industry leaders and delivering impressive results. Because of his remarkable impact, he was offered the opportunity to move from San Diego to Buenos Aires.
“One of my hospitality clients engaged ZS to run a large project that required staffing in Buenos Aires,” Schafer recalls. “I was excited to get the opportunity to build out a team, continue my relationship with the client and live abroad for a year.”
ZS provided extensive support for Schafer’s international move to Buenos Aires, ensuring a smooth transition both professionally and personally. “I’ll admit, I was nervous and excited about the move,” he says. “But ZS made sure it was smooth and successful.”
Before relocating, Schafer had already planned a 10-day business trip to Buenos Aires, allowing him to network with his expanding team and get a feel for the local office environment. The visit offered Schafer the chance to build new relationships and acclimate to his future home office. Additionally, ZS demonstrated their commitment to Schafer’s success by covering the cost of Spanish learning classes. Though English is the primary language used in our offices and with clients, it was helpful for Schafer to connect with his new community, equipping him with the language skills necessary to thrive in his new role and fully immerse himself in the vibrant culture of Buenos Aires.
Schafer’s journey from San Diego to Buenos Aires has been transformative on many levels. Professionally, it allowed him to leverage his Navy leadership skills to build and manage a team that has grown to around 100 people. Personally, the move was even more rewarding as he was able to relocate with his partner. Together, they have embraced their new life in Buenos Aires, enjoying the opportunity to travel and explore South America, enriching their lives with shared experiences and adventures.
